2021 PAXCON Field Adventures

After over a year stuck at home and online, PAXCON is excited to get outdoors!

Join the Patuxent River Conference (PAXCON) in September and October for a series of field trips around the Patuxent watershed. We look forward to seeing everyone in 2022 when we gather for our next in-person conference!

Patuxent River Park Kayak Trip, Thursday, Sep 16, 10 am to 2 pm

Learn about the many conservation successes at Patuxent River Park while exploring the mid-river portion of the Patuxent during this guided kayak tour. Bring your own lunch and dress for the weather. Kayaks, paddles, and PFDs included. Rain date is Friday, Sept 17. Participant maximum: 18, Age limit: 18+.

​Paddling the Patuxent, Friday, Sep 17, 6 to 8 pm

We’ll set out for an evening paddle on the Patuxent River to explore the beauty of the marsh and the plants and animals that call it home. Participant maximum: 15, Age limit: Adults and older children.

​Patuxent Wetlands Exploration, Friday, Sep 24, 1 to 4 pm

Learn to identify the plants and understand the role of wetlands in protecting water quality and providing wildlife habitat. This will be a land-based exploration. Participant maximum: 15, Age limit: Adults and older teens.

​Field Trip at Jug Bay, Thursday, Oct 7, 10 am to 2 pm

Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, with its marshes and forests, play an important role in the health of the Patuxent River. Join us for a 'field trip' to find out how we care for, learn from, and educate about these important habitats. We will give an overview of our student education programs, citizen science projects, research activities, and stewardship programs as we hike through the Sanctuary. Bring your lunch! Participant maximum: 50, Age limit: 18+.

Meet with WSSC Water staff to learn about the drinking water reservoirs and dam they manage in the northern portion of the Patuxent River. Attendees will learn about WSSC Water's commitment to source water protection and the history of the reservoir system. Please wear close-toed shoes. Participant maximum: 25, Age limit: 18+.

​Mighty Marshes Community Days, Saturdays, Starting Oct 9, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm

Become a Mighty Marshes Ambassador! Individuals and families are invited to join our pilot program series, facilitated by grant funds from our H20 Today exhibit. Come to harvest, plant, grow, or all three! 

Participant maximum: 80 per session
Age limit: Not recommended for children under 6 years of age.
